Solid maple chessmen. Hand painted by Hungarian artisans in Hungary. The chessmen are painted to replicate the Huszars from the 15th century. Below is a description of the Huzsars. Member of a European light- cavalry unit used for scouting, modeled on the 15th-century Hungarian light-horse corps. The brilliantly colored Hungarian hussar's uniform was imitated in other European armies; it consisted of a busby (high cylindrical cloth cap), a jacket with heavy braiding, and a dolman (loose coat worn hanging from the left shoulder). Several hussar regiments of the British army were converted from light dragoons in the 19th century; they survive today as armored units. Chessmen are felted. Chess board is crafted of Inlaid Italian briarwood and white birdseye maple from Italy. Chess board is bordered with black onyx type material. Natural wood grains are brushed with gold leaf, the board has a high glossy finish. This is a gorgeous board to show off these beautiful pieces.
